E-66: Surface Danger Areas

Previous: E-65: Size and Weight Considerations

E-66. Infantry leaders must consider the surface danger zones of combat vehicle weapon systems operating within their units. This information is crucial for leaders to develop safe direct fire control plans. Application of surface danger zones prevents fratricide and maximizes direct fire upon the enemy.

E-67. Each weapon system has a unique surface danger zone. Surface danger zones are the MSD and angles considered when operating in close proximity to weapon systems. Surface danger zones take into consideration a round’s maximum distance, lateral dispersion, and back blast (if applicable). This information allows leaders to plan for safe and effective maneuver of forces.
