H-85. Because the internal walls of most buildings function as partitions rather than loadbearing members, smaller explosive charges can be used to reduce them. When C4 or other military explosives are not available, one or more fragmentation grenades or a Claymore can be used to reduce some internal walls. These field-expedient reduction devices should be tamped to increase their effectiveness and to reduce the amount of explosive force directed to the rear. Take extreme care when attempting to perform this type of reduction because fragments may penetrate walls and cause friendly casualties. If walls are made of plaster or dry wall, mechanical reduction may be more effective.
