6-172. Obtains detailed information about a specified route and terrain where the enemy could influence movement along a route. Route reconnaissance focuses along a specific line of communications (such as a road, railway, or cross-country mobility corridor). It provides new or updated information on route conditions (such as obstacles and bridge classifications, and enemy and civilian activity along the route). A route reconnaissance includes not only the route itself, but also all terrain along the route from which the enemy could influence the friendly force’s movement. The commander normally assigns this mission to use a specific route for friendly movement.
