Movement is the positioning of combat power to establish the conditions for maneuver (ADP 3-90). Maneuver is movement in conjunction with fires (ADP 3-90). Maneuver happens once a unit has made contact with the enemy and combines movement with fires to gain a position of advantage over the enemy. Leaders use their understanding of the enemy situation to identify where and when to deliberately transition from movement to maneuver before making contact with the enemy. This chapter discusses route movement selection, navigation, and execution and situations of tactical movement and maneuver within the Infantry rifle platoon and squad.
